How to Size the Perfect Garment Hanger
One size doesn't fit all when it comes to your clothes. Why should it when it comes to your hangers?Stop ruining great clothes with cheap hangers. Your garments inevitably spend more time in your closet than they do on your shoulders. Cheap, wire hangers plague closets, causing limp garments, puckered shoulders, and, ultimate, ruining your clothes. Protect your investment with premium wooden garment hangers SIZED to fit your individual build.

"Alan Katzman of Alan Couture, a bespoke clothier in Manhattan whose suits range from $5, 000 to $30, 000... calls quality hangers a must. Unlike the dreaded wire versions, hangers with wide shoulders and a broader overall design prolong a garment's life by preventing sagging or stretching."[1]
No Wire Hangers!
Nov 16, 2008, Wall Street Journal
Ordinary hangers just hang your clothes. They do nothing more. Examples are free wooden hangers, wire and cardboard hangers from dry cleaners, and plastic hangers, and they can be found in many ordinary closets. Exceptional wooden hangers, on the other hand, are deliberately crafted from premium woods and protect and extend the life of your clothing. They provide opulent shoulder support, are correctly sized, and do not damage your clothes. Over the life of your wardrobe, they can save you thousands of dollars in ruined garments (think about the number of times you've thrown away a shirt because of shoulder dimples or a suit because it became limp).
The New Standards of Assessment
Ordinary standards for assessing hangers are no longer valid. A new criteria for premium luxury hangers is needed to ensure proper form and fit. They include: - Wood Used in Construction - should offer beauitful wood grain and be environmentally responsible
- Hanger Style - should be appropriate for the garment which it hangs, including contoured, notches, clips, and trouser bar styles.
- Trouser Bar Style
- Trouser Bar Style
- Hanger Width - should be as wide as your shoulders
- Hanger Girth - should offer the optimal amount of shoulder support
These four qualities represent the new criteria for sizing the perfect hanger! Kirby Allison's Hanger Project has created the first collection of luxury wooden hangers.
A. Wood Used in Construction
Premium, luxury hangers are constructed from solid wood with a beautiful grain. The wood grain creates a beautiful, natural pattern that decorates the hanger. Plastic, synthetic hangers are insufficient for quality garments made from premium natural fibers (wool, cashmere, silk). It is also important that a wood is chosen that was harvested with environmentally responsible practices. Many Chinese woods, such as lotus wood and beech wood, are the product of environmentally irresponsible deforestation.[2]All hangers from Kirby Allison's Hanger Project are made from U.S.A. Maple Wood that we purchase directly from Weyerhaeuser. All of our premium maple wood is harvested under environmentally responsible and sustainable practices and regulated by the U.S. Government. We then ship our wood to our own manufacturing facilities. Most other manufacturers source their woods directly from China, for obvious reasons. Although these woods are acceptable for use, their origins and environmental policies are more difficult to track.
B. Hanger Style
The style of a hanger is the first quality for sizing the perfect hanger. Men and women have dramatically different wardrobes, and the same is true for their hangers. A premium wooden hanger should be gender specific. The following is a list and brief description of different styles of hangers and their use: Men's Hangers
- Suit Hangers - a proper suit hanger is used to hang matching jacket and trouser sets. The hanger should offer opulent support to protect the delicate, tailored shoulder construction and drape. They should be fully contoured and have a large shoulder flare to optimize shoulder support. Trouser bars can come in several styles (see "Trouser Hangers" below). The width is also important; in order to offer optimal support, the suit hanger should extend up to but not beyond the point where the shoulder meets the sleeve. This is especially important for gentlemen with broad shoulders, as the weight of a large jacket distributed on a skinny hanger will almost immediately destroy its drape.
- Jacket Hangers - a proper jacket hanger should contain all of the same characteristics of a suit hanger (detailed above) but without the trouser bar. Jacket hangers are used for sports coats that would not have matching trousers and guest coat closets.
- Trouser Hangers - Trouser hangers are an essential part of any well-appointed closet and are only used for hanging trousers. Because of their specific application, they save room relative to using old suit hangers. The most important criteria for a premium wooden trouser hanger is whether it creases trousers. Locking bars, although very common, actually damage the fabric of most trousers over time and lead to creasing across the thigh, which can result in embarrassing creases across the trousers when pulled out of the closet. Trouser hangers are not contoured.
- Locking Bars - a wooden bar locks the trousers between a metal wire. This mechanism is BAD, as they cause creasing across trousers and can damage premium wools (like Super 100's). This is the most common and inexpensive type of trouser bar and can be found on most department store hangers.
- Felted Trouser Bar - the trouser bar is flocked or felted with a material whose texture "grips" trousers. Trousers drape over the bar and no pressure is applied (as with a locking bar), thereby preventing creasing. This is the BEST style and can only be found on premium wooden suit hangers.
- Clamping Trouser Bar - two planks of wood with felted interiors clamp trousers at their cuff and hang them vertically upside. This style is popular but demands a lot of vertical closet space. The weight of the trousers "pull" wrinkles out over time as the trousers hang. Can be found on premium wooden suit hangers, although they increase their cost significantly.
- Shirt Hangers - a man's shirt hanger should extend all the way to the edge of the shoulder. If a shirt hanger is too narrow (width), puckering or dimpling occurs. It should also be thick enough to offer support, but not so thick that closet space is unnecessarily consumed. Premium wooden shirt hangers are especially important for loosely-knit fabrics, such as cotton and cashmere shirts. Shirt hangers are not contoured.
Women's Hangers
Because of the diversity of a woman's wardrobe, special hangers are needed that address their specific concerns and needs. Men's hangers should never be used for women's clothing. A collection of premium women's hangers should all have the identical profile, as to create consistency acrosss a women's wardrobe. The following is a list of the five most essential women's hangers:
- Women's Notched Suit Hanger
- Women's Jacket Hanger
- Women's Blouse Hanger
- Women's Skirt Hanger
- Women's Shirt Hanger
C. Hanger Width - *Most Imporant Criteria*
The width of a hanger is the most overlooked but critical characteristic of a proper hanger. One size doesn't fit all when it comes to your clothing, and the same should be true when it comes to your hangers. Considering that your garments will spend more time in your closet over the lifetime than on your shoulders, it is easy to understand why this characteris is so important. HTML clipboard THE GUY IN THE NEXT OFFICE wears a size 36S suit, while you wear a 42R, so why do you use the same sized hangers? The Hanger Project recognizes that a premium suit deserves a premium suit hanger. Founded in 2006 by Kirby Allison, this Dallas-based company offers three different width options, each with 2.5-inch shoulder flares that ensure the jacket is fully filled out on each end.[3]
Well Hung
Playboy Fashion Alert The sizing principle is the same for both Suits and Shirts: the hanger should extend all the way to--but not beyond--the point where the shoulder meets the sleeve. The most accurate method of sizing your hanger is to measure directly across the back (the point-to-point measurement). See the below illustration on sizing the perfect Suit Hanger.

Kirby Allison's Hanger Project offers multiple widths for both Wooden Suit Hangers and Wooden Shirt Hangers. Our Premium Suit Hangers come in three widths: 17.0", 18.5", and 20.0". Our 20.0" Premium Suit Hanger is an exceptionally large suit hanger perfect for professional athletes and other gentlemen with particularly broad shoulders.
Special note on sizing men's shirt hangers. Luxury Wooden Shirt Hangers should have a girth or thickness of at least 3/8". The hanger, therefore, relies much more on the support of the width than girth. When sizing your shirt hanger, choose the size that is closest to the width of your shirt. It is okay for your shirt hanger to extend slightly beyond the shoulder. With the right luxury shirt hanger, you will be able to almost eliminate the annoying shirt puckering that often plagues closets.
D. Hanger Girth
Support is Essential for Protecting Your Garments. A properly fitting hanger is an essential part of any well-appointed closet. Wooden suit hangers from Kirby Allison's Hanger Project's, for example, is 5x wider than the standard skinny hanger given free with a suit purchase from Neiman Marcus, Dillards, Folleys, etc. (2.5" vs. 0.5"). There is no comparison between a luxury hanger and the "free" hanger given away with most purchases. If you spend $15 on a pair of shoe trees for $300 shoes, why wouldn't you spend $25 on a luxury suit hanger for a $2, 000 suit. The GIRTH of a hanger, or it's thickness, is particularily important at its ends. Kirby Allison's 2.5" Shoulder Flares distributes the weight of a jackt over a surface area 5x larger than average. This, in turn, ensures that the drap of the jacket is protected.
Special Note about The Author
Kirby Allison's Hanger Project is the premier provider of luxury wooden hangers. We created this Google Knol to help educate people of style that recognize the importance of a quality hanger in garment care. We have sought to share the knowledge developed over years of research and collaboration. This information is not "unbiased" -- we are obviously biased towards our hangers, which meet all of the standards of luxury wooden hangers. However, these same characteristics can be used to evaluate and purchase any hangers, whether it be from us or any other provider (Wal-Mart, Target, The Container Store, etc. etc.). We believe that understanding how hangers protect--or destroy--your garments is to everyone's benefit. Per the protest of several Knol users, we have removed all but three links back to our website.
