The MLM Opportunity
I am told that "Maka'ike" means "to see clearly" in Hawaiian. It is with this phrase I begin my first article on the subject of Multi-Level Marketing or Pyramid Schemes vs. Standard Business Practices.
It was with great interest that I read the recent articles about the law suits against Amway and Fortune. I am in that 99 percentile that has not succeeded in my first 90 days and I am not driving a new car or going on vacations to exotic lands. Oh my! Maybe I should sue them for telling me it was possible. I listened to one interview posted online and was just filled with disbelief. The woman actually said, "What are they doing for me?" I'm sorry but when you went to the business opportunity meeting, were you under the influence? Did the word "opportunity" somehow escape you or were you unsure of the meaning? That these million dollar lawsuits are not laughed out of court and the people who bring them are not fined for bring frivolous lawsuits, is at best criminal. In my opinion, it should be the opposite way around. It should be the owners of these multimillion dollar opportunity companies who are suing the reps who did not appreciate the fact that they had indeed been offered an "opportunity." In all the meetings I have ever been to, I was never once offered a "j -o- b." Did they have to fill out a job application? Were they told that they had to go out 16 hours a day and work the business in order to be successful? The answers to both the above questions, is probably, "No." The right answer probably should have been, "Yes." I say that because, in being given this "opportunity", there is no one telling you that you can't do it, that you aren't qualified, that you are over qualified, that you just don't fit with what the organization had in mind. The "opportunity" is yours for the taking. Hand over a couple of hundred dollars and you have a business. How many of you, while interviewing for your dream "j- o- b", would gladly hand over some money, if the interviewer said, "For the mere cost of $200, the job can be yours!" At the age of 49, with that big 5 - 0 looming over me this year, I have encountered my fair share of MLM companies. I have gone to the meetings to appease my friends. I have signed up with the companies to help my friends reach their next goal. I have signed up because I bought into all the hype dished out by very talented speakers and salespeople. I also have signed up because I liked the product and wanted the discount because it was something I was going to use (at least for a time), until the next fad appeared and my interest went elsewhere. Where did the responsibility lie? They offered me the trust to take what I was offered and do something with it. They did not run a battery of psych tests to see if I had the drive and the ambition to be successful. I did not receive a "thanks for stopping by and meeting with us" letter telling me they would keep my resume on file for the next year. I would start off with enthusiasm, but would quickly be disappointed when people would not see what I saw. Oftentimes the people I got to sign up did it for the same reasons I did, to help me out and get me off their backs. Did they want a "business?" Maybe the idea of a business, maybe the rewards of a business, maybe the fantasy.... But did I want, did they want, the work it takes to get a business off the ground and make it successful? Not just, "No, " but, "Hell No!" Again, in my opinion, it is not the MLM companies that fail their people. It is the people who fail the companies they sign on to represent. By Susan Taylor -|
